Get to Know the Team
The POI team is part of Grab's Geo department. We build POI data systems and key geo-services such as search, recommendation, geocoding, and reverse geocoding, supporting Grab's businesses across mobility, delivery, and payments in Southeast Asia.
Get to Know the Role
We are looking for a Software Engineer Intern to join the POI team. In this role, you will work with experienced engineers to build tools, data pipelines, and backend services that help improve the coverage, freshness, and quality of map data. You will gain hands-on experience in backend engineering, large-scale data processing, and practical applications of emerging technologies such as Large Language Models.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in developing and improving backend services for POI data processing, search, geocoding, and reverse geocoding systems.
Support the parsing, cleaning, integration, and normalization of map data from multiple data sources.
Build scripts, tools, or small services to improve data processing efficiency and data quality.
Participate in experiments using Large Language Models for intelligent parsing, data generation, data validation, or workflow automation.
Work with engineers to troubleshoot issues, improve system reliability, and optimize existing workflows.
Learn and follow engineering best practices, including code reviews, testing, documentation, and team collaboration.
Qualifications
Required Skills
Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Geographic Information Systems, or a related field.
Solid programming foundation in at least one language such as Python, Go, or Java.
Good understanding of basic computer science concepts, including data structures, algorithms, databases, operating systems, and computer networks.
Familiarity with SQL and common database concepts; experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, or Elasticsearch is a plus.
Basic understanding of data parsing, data cleaning, or data pipeline concepts.
Experience using AI tools to support learning, development, or data processing, such as Claude Code, ChatGPT, Cursor, or Copilot for coding, debugging, documentation, data analysis, or productivity improvement, with the ability to critically evaluate and validate AI-generated outputs.
Strong curiosity, willingness to learn, problem-solving mindset, good communication skills, and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Bonus Points
Experience with backend projects, data processing projects, web crawling, or automation tools.
Interest in Large Language Models, prompt engineering, or applying AI tools to data processing workflows.
Interest in maps, POI data, geospatial systems, or location-based services.
